How to Clean a Green Pool:

A Step-by-Step Guide. If you’re a pool owner, you know how frustrating it can be when your once clear blue water turns green. A green pool is not only unsightly but can also be a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and algae. But don’t worry; you can turn your green pool into a sparkling oasis with these simple steps.

Step 1: Test your water

Before you start cleaning your green pool, you need to test the water. Chlorine levels, pH levels, and total alkalinity need to be balanced before any chemical treatment is applied. Turn the valve on your sand filter to ‘Recirculate’. For cartridge filters remove the cartridge, clean and leave to one side.

Step 2: Brush the walls and floor

Use a pool brush to scrub the walls and floor of the pool to remove any remaining algae. This process can be tedious, but it’s crucial to ensure that all the algae is removed from the pool, walls and floor. Use a leaf rake to remove as much debris from the pool as possible.

Step 3: Shock the pool

Shock the pool with a high dose of chlorine to kill the algae and bacteria. This process involves adding five times the recommended amount of chlorine for your pool size. Follow the instructions on the chlorine package, and allow the chlorine to circulate for a minimum of 12 hours. Add a flocculent. Follow the instructions on the flocculent package.

Step 4: Vacuum the pool

Once the pool pump is turned off from step 3 above allow algae to settle for 24 hours before vacuuming.

Use a vacuum to remove any debris or dead algae that has settled on the bottom of the pool. The vacuum should be set to waste to avoid sending the debris and dead algae through the filter, as this can help to re-contaminate the water. Vacuuming has to be slow and gentle to avoid stirring up the dead algae. If you rush this step, you will have to wait a further 24 hours and vacuum again

Step 5: Test water
